Livigno in brief
In the year 1187, under the bishop of Como, Livigno under its name
"Vinae et Vineole" becomes feudal property of the Venosta
family. This name, some time later, becomes attached the prefix
"Li", becoming "Livigno." It appears that "Vinae"
is a reference to the S. Maria and Blesaccia plains. The name "Vineole"
was extracted from the Vago Alps, the Campaccio and the Federia
Alps. Indeed, this name emerged out of a variation of the word "Lavinia",
a word used in ancient time for avalanches, which were an oft seen
phenomenon in this region with its long and harsh winters (Latin:
Lavina - the dialect from Bormio: Leina - in ancient German: Lobine).
As the ancient Vicinìa di Bormio ("Neighbour Bormio's")
Livigno with Trepalle (at 2.096m the highest located village in
Europe, where people live the whole year round) today hast about
5.020 inhabitants.
