Immacolata in Viera church
Consecration
This church is an exact reproduction of the original one, which
was destroyed by building the reservoir by the Engadiner Kraftwerke
(EKW). The church was flooded by the water as everything else in
the valley. Now the "new" church is situated at the Italian-Swiss
border, where the river Spöll runs into the Gallo valley. Water
"flooding into on of the last untouched faunas, with the village
Viera and its Maria Immacolata church".(see: A. Martinelli,
"Livigno, Valle Convalli Chiese Contrade").
The church was the point of direction for people going to Zernez
from Livigno. "When they left the church in Veira they said
'Mary will protect my way', Virgin Mary will guide me; as they saw
the chirch still far away, they said 'if Virgin Mary is with me,
a spiderweb is like a wall for me'. Does she leave me alone, a wall
will be for me nothing more than a spiderweb." (see: A. Martinelli,
ibidem) .
